Lab rats

After Kankurou had failed to save his brother from the Akatsuki he had doubled his training efforts. One goal of his puppeteering squad had been to develop new and more efficient poisons. However, the squad’s safety rules state that antidotes be developed for every new poison that is produced. They were deeply impressed by Sakura’s performance when she created an antidote for Sasori’s complex poison. A request was sent to the Hokage that she would come and assist them in the development of antidotes. Sakura saw it as a chance to get a well deserved break from Tsunade’s harsh training. Teamed up with Kankurou she sets off to work in Suna’s laboratories.

‘I have separated the olixene parts from the pyrovine plants I brought from Konoha,’ Sakura told Kankurou while staring into the microscope. ‘I’ll just soak it in water and it should be ready to be mixed with the rest.’ Kankurou did not respond. With deep concentration he mixed the ingredients Sakura had prepared earlier. He was unusually quiet.

‘Is there something wrong?’ Sakura asked and looked over.

‘Wh… what?’ Kankurou responded nervously.

‘You’ve been so quiet,’ Sakura said. ‘Is there something troubling you?’

‘No, it’s nothing…’

‘Come one, you can tell me,’ Sakura continued. ‘I know you’re not the quiet type.’

‘Well, ok… how should I put this…’ Kankuruo searched for words. ‘It’s just that I don’t like working with you.’

‘What?!’ Sakura exclaimed. She was dumbfounded as to what made him blurt that out. Sure, he had been a bully when they first met three years ago but she had seen him grown into a caring man since then. ‘After I saved your life and all shouldn’t you at least show some gratitude?’

‘Oh, it’s not about that,’ he said, obviously growing more uncomfortable. ‘I’m glad you came and helped me out back then. It’s just that you make me look weak with the whole Sasori incident…’

‘Hah, you’re jealous that me and elder Chiyo beat him when you couldn’t, am I right?’ Sakura sneered.

‘It doesn’t look good when two women took care of someone that a man couldn’t,’ Kankurou said.

‘Hmph… Suna’s shinobis are no better than Konoha’s,’ Sakura sighed and went back to her microscope. ‘Incurable pigs.’

‘I knew I should’ve kept my mouth shut…’ Kankurou grumbled.
